A Century of Transformation
From a humble silk weaving institute in 1927 to a premier engineering college — our journey spans nearly a century of relentless pursuit of excellence.
Established on 19th July 1927 as the Government Silk Weaving and Dyeing Institute in the central jail premises at Berhampore, we began with a mission to train local artisans in silk production and weaving. Over the decades, we evolved through multiple transformations:
Government Silk Weaving & Dyeing Institute
Established in central jail premises, Berhampore, to train local artisans in silk production under Directorate of Industries, West Bengal.
Shifted to Present Campus
Moved to 4 Barrack Square (East), the current location that would become home to generations of engineers.
Bengal Technological Institute
Upgraded with 3-year diploma in Textile Technology and 2-year artisan course. A new era of technical education began.
College of Textile Technology
Upgraded to degree college with B.Sc.(Tech.) in Textile Technology, affiliated to University of Calcutta. Modernized syllabus and labs.
Engineering College Era
Renamed Government College of Engineering & Textile Technology. Introduced B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering under WBUT.
Expansion & Excellence
Added Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. NBA accredited Textile Technology department since 2004.
